The language of these releases has become so consistently superlative that it is easy to tune out. GPT-5.2's arrival in Microsoft 365 Copilot in December 2025 is worth paying attention to specifically because the improvements are measurable in tasks that business users actually perform — not in abstract benchmarks.

For technical discussions, the model handles domain terminology better and produces more accurate summaries of technical decisions. The "Recap" feature identifies open questions that were raised but not resolved.
Practical impact: Meeting summaries are one of the highest-ROI Copilot features for most organisations. Anyone who has ever written up meeting notes manually will use this.
Data Residency and the EU Data Boundary
Microsoft 365 Copilot processes your prompts and company data to generate responses. For DACH businesses, the question of where this processing happens is not purely technical — it affects your DSGVO compliance posture.
Microsoft's EU Data Boundary commitment, which took full effect in 2024, means that for tenants in the EU, Microsoft 365 data — including Copilot prompts and responses — is processed and stored within EU datacentre regions. The AI model itself runs on Microsoft infrastructure; the data you send to it stays within the EU boundary.
This does not fully resolve every DSGVO question. Some scenarios still require attention:
- Grounding data access: Copilot responds based on what it can access in your tenant — SharePoint, email, Teams. If your SharePoint permissions are not correctly configured, Copilot may surface data to users who would not otherwise have access to it. This is the most common Copilot-related compliance issue we see in practice.
- Interaction logs: Microsoft retains Copilot interaction logs for 28 days by default. Administrators can configure this in the Microsoft 365 compliance portal. For organisations with specific retention requirements, this setting needs to be reviewed before Copilot is deployed widely.
- Third-party plugins: If you enable Copilot plugins that connect to external services — CRM systems, ERP, external APIs — data may flow outside the EU boundary through those connections. Each plugin needs to be evaluated separately.
Before You Deploy Copilot: A Readiness Checklist
GPT-5.2's improved capabilities make this a good time to roll out Copilot if you have been holding back. Before you assign licences, address these preparation steps:
- Audit SharePoint permissions. Copilot can access anything the user can access in SharePoint. Review whether overly permissive sharing means users will see data they should not.
